History

Eberstadt was in the time of Charlemagne a small Einzelhofsiedlung south of the River Vltava, at the intersection of two trade routes. Even the Roman road from Ladenburg to Blessed city passed through here. The first documentary mention in which a certain Walther and his wife Willi wind the monastery Lorsch transfer them their goods, dated from September 1 782 Perhaps those Frankish noble was also the founder of the former church of St. Lawrence, the structurally altered several times today as Trinity Church on one of the sand dunes can be used.

In the 13th century Eberstadt came to the Lords of Frankenstein. It remained for over 400 years in its possession. The Franks Steiner, whose castle is first mentioned in 1252, were the local, court and church leaders. They had in the old church, where still today remember their grave laying grave stones, coats of arms and inscriptions on them. The tenacious efforts of the Landgrave of Hesse- Darmstadt, to acquire the residence ahead of their little reign, 1661 were successful. The Franks Steiner sold their property and moved to Middle Franconia.

In the Thirty Years' War, the Swedes burned in 1635 from almost the whole village. Many of the residents who managed to escape the fortified Darmstadt, died there of the plague. Over 40 years took the reconstruction.

In the 18th century, the social situation of the population Eberstadt improved. The lively tourist traffic through the village had trade and commerce flourish, and along the main road caused many large inns. Goethe returned in the restaurant "The Ox" one and began his diary with the words: " Eberstadt, the 30.10.1775. Here then would be the cornerstone of my Tagbuches ".

In the 19th century, the new Main-Neckar -Bahn and the beginnings of industrialization Eberstadt to further development helped. The population rose sharply, and it stirred a varied social life. Built in 1847, City Hall is still part of the self-confidence of the emerging church.

After 1900, Eberstadt registered some 6000 inhabitants and had spread to the north with a villa colony to Gemarkungsgrenze Darmstadt. A narrow gauge suburban railway connected both places. It created a separate water, gas and electricity works, a public library, a public bath, a new cemetery hall and two new schools. Other industries, including six breweries, moved on, and the street lighting has been introduced. 1914, the suburban railway was electrified and operated as a tramway. This could be extended until 1936 as overland train to Seeheim and Jugenheim.

On April 1, 1937, until then independent municipality became part of Darmstadt.

Coat of arms

The Eberstädter coat of arms still used in the local voluntary sector and in the home care goes back to the seal of the former local court. This used by the Lords of Frankenstein Court, headed by a mayor was responsible for the lower courts as well as for the certification of all transactions of the villagers. The oldest evidence of this seal is from the October 1617 and shows a boar with three acorns.

After this presentation the use today of arms was designed in 1972 according to heraldic rules. It shows a boar in the upper field and acorns at the bottom. The upper half of the shield is yellow, the lower black, the boar dark red, his tusks are white. With the colors red and gold should be noted from Frankenstein to the colors of Lords.

When the seal came up for the first time, is unknown. It is quite possible that can still find older seal impressions as of 1617. The emblem in any case can be easily explained from the place name. The name Eberstadt turn, can possibly be attributed to a name, probably of that the Frankish nobleman, who founded the settlement in the 7th or early 8th century.
