DARPA Grand Challenge (2007)

The DARPA Urban Challenge 2007 is a race between autonomous robotic vehicles, which took place on November 3, 2007 in Victorville, CA on the former George Air Force Base.

The race is the third in the competition by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency ( DARPA ) initiated a program encouraging the development of autonomous vehicles. In contrast to the two previous races, where an essentially straight course also had to be taken across the desert, abandoned barracks of the former Air Force vertex George Air Force Base is the third race held in built-up areas. For the team that completed the first one 60 miles long and divided into three missions course in less than 6 hours, a total prize money of 3.5 million dollars was announced by DARPA. The first three teams to reach the destination in the shortest time and have to show the least deductions for rule violations, get 2 million, 1 million and 500,000 U.S. dollars. The DARPA Urban Challenge 2007 has won the Tartan Racing Team, second place comes the Stanford Racing Team and to the third place team Victor Tango. The German finalists AnnieWAY (University of Karlsruhe) and CarOLO (TU Braunschweig, successor project: City Pilot) retired during the race due to technical difficulties ( AnnieWAY: probably computer error, stopped at the entrance to a roundabout, CarOLO: bent sensor after collision with the team MIT) from. The VW Passat Junior of the Stanford Racing Team, developed under the leadership of the German -born professor Sebastian Thrun, indeed was the first in the finish line, but got a time penalty for a minor violation of the California Highway Code. The truck from Oshkosh was stopped just before he hit a wall. MIT and Cornell had another collision, but both were able to continue.
