Darss-Zingst Bodden Chain

The Darß- Zingster Boddenkette is a sheet of water on the Baltic coast north-east of Rostock. It consists of several in east-west direction strung together Bodden or lagoons that are separated by the peninsula fish - darss from the open Baltic Sea. The water area is 197 km ² in size, the average water depth is only about two feet.

The salinity of the water increases from west to east, since only at the eastern end of the bay chain via the Gell current and the small opening between Big and Little Werder Werder is a connection to the Baltic Sea, where a water exchange can take place. Earlier links with the sea as the Prerowstrom in the north ( after 1872 ) and west of the Loop Permin and the fish country ( in the 14th century) were closed by man. In the Darß- Zingster Boddenkette the rivers Recknitz and Barthe lead; total catchment area covers an area of ​​1578 km ². On the south shore of the bay chain are the towns Ribnitz Damgarten and Barth.
