Wild carrot (Daucus carota subsp. Carota)

The carrot (Daucus ) are a genus of Umbelliferae ( Apiaceae ) with about 25 species. Native to Central Europe only two subspecies of carrot ( Daucus carota) are: the wild carrot (. Daucus carota subsp carota ) and as cultivar of carrot (. Daucus carota subsp sativus ), also called garden carrot or carrot culture.

Features

The carrots are annual or perennial herbs that are often hairy or bristly fluffy. The blades are feathered, two to three times. The end portions are always narrow.

Flowers and inflorescence

The flowers are in compound umbels, which are terminally or seemingly leaf against constantly. Cover and Hüllchen are three to vielblättrig. The bracts, sometimes the Hüllchenblätter are pinnate. The umbel rays slant towards fruit ripening bird nest -like manner.

The flowers are polygamous. The calyx teeth are small and inconspicuous. The petals are pure white, reddish or yellowish. Above they are emarginate and have a pointed, is proposed lobules. The petals are often unequal in size and the outermost edge of the flowers is often brilliant.

Pollination is by insects ( Diptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera ).

Fruit and seeds

The fruit is ovoid to ellipsoidal, and cylindrical or compressed. The main ribs are thread-like or bead- stepping forward and hairy bristly. The secondary ribs form a row of spikes, the two lateral side ribs form the edge of the part of the fruit. The spines are occupied at the top of barbs. These can be stunted in the fruits of Döldchenmitten to warts. Oil welts are there ever any side under rib and two under the joint surface.

Dissemination

The genus is native to North Africa, Southwest Asia and Europe. It is cultivated in temperate areas worldwide and wild there too.
