Davalliaceae

Canary Hasenpfotenfarn ( Davallia canariensis)

The Davalliaceae are a family of genuine ferns ( Polypodiopsida ).

Features

The rhizomes are long creeping. They have a Dictyostele are dorsiventral and wear scales. Old leaves fall off along with their leaf bases. The leaf blades are usually pinnate one to four times, rarely undivided. Sterile and fertile leaves are alike ( monomorphic ). The nerve end freely, branch dichotomously or feathery. The sori are on the undersides of leaves near the leaf margin (infra marginal) or clearly separated from the edge. They are round with cup -, kidney - or moon-shaped indusia. The sporangia have a three-row, long stem. The annulus is vertical. The spores are ellipsoidal, monolet ( simple scar ), yellow to brown.

The gametophyte is green and heart-shaped.

The basic chromosome number is x = 40

Dissemination

The family is widespread in the Paläotropis and adjacent subtropics, and the Pacific Islands. Most species grow as epiphytes, rare epipetrisch.

System

The family is in the specified scope here probably monophyletic. My sister taxon are the Polypodiaceae. It includes 4 to 5 genera with about 65 species. The genus boundaries of Araiostegia, Davallia and Pachypleuria against each other are poorly defined, should all be in the present extent para- or polyphyletic.

The classes are according to Smith et al. 2006:

  • Araiostegia Copel. , With about 16 species in South and Southeast Asia.
  • Rabbit's foot ferns ( Davallia Sm, including Humata Cav, Parasorus Alderw, Scyphularia Fée. . ), With at least 20 species, including the only European species of the family: Canary Hasenpfotenfarn ( Davallia canariensis (L.) Sm ); it occurs in the Azores, Macaronesia, in western Spain and Portugal.
