Dave " Baby" Cortez ( born August 13, 1938 in Detroit, Michigan; actually David Cortez Clowney ) is an American R & B musician and organist.

Clowney learned to play the piano like his father, who was also a pianist. After ten years he moved to the organ. The mid-1950s he played and sang in a band called " Pearls" ( 1955-1957 ). As a studio musician he played for Gladys Knight & the Pips, the Isley Brothers and the Chantels, Little Anthony & the Imperials with he was on tour. In addition, however, he also got the opportunity to solo recordings.

First he tried it as a David Clowney, 1958, he then took the instrumental The Happy organ on which he had written with Ken Wood and James J. man of war, and called himself " Dave Baby Cortez ". The tune was a modification of the nursery rhyme Short'nin ' Bread and the new version was originally called The Dog and the Cat. It was meant as a pop-rock vocal piece with piano accompaniment. Clowney tried it with his Hammond organ and had developed the first big R & B hit with an organ. The Instrumental reached # 1 on the U.S. Billboard charts.

The three authors were with The Whistling Organ immediately added a single in the same style follow that came, however, only reached No. 61 of the charts. This was followed by Single Single, without once again scored a hit, and Dave Cortez would have been a one- hit wonder, but with a change of record company of success came back. The first single on Chess Records obtained three years after his last hit the top 10 charts. The written with Paul Winley Rinky Dink was instrumental in the Cha -Cha -Cha style.

Until the end of 1963 Dave Cortez was able to post some more chart positions for himself, then it was - even with the beginning of the " British Invasion " - again quiet around him. It appeared a few LPs for various labels and in 1973, he had with Someone Has Taken Your Place another R & B Top 50 hit. However, in the late 1970s, he retired from the music business and since then a regular profession after.
