Dave Barrett

Usually called David Barrett, OC ( born October 2, 1930 in Vancouver ), Dave Barrett, is a Canadian politician. He was on September 15, 1972 to December 22, 1975 Prime Minister of the Province of British Columbia and Chair of the British Columbia New Democratic Party (NDP ). Barrett is currently the only head of government of British Columbia Jewish faith. From 1988 to 1993 he sat for the New Democratic Party in the Canadian House of Commons.

Biography

Barrett studied philosophy at Seattle University and social work at Saint Louis University. He joined the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation in, the predecessor of the NDP, and was from 1957 in the prison of the province of British Columbia engaged. In the elections to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia on September 12, 1960, he was elected in the constituency Dewdney. In 1965 he represented the constituency after a redistricting Coquitlam.

In April 1969 he was a candidate for the party presidency of the NDP, but was defeated Thomas Berger. When the NDP with Berger but five months later lost the elections at the top, she chose Barrett as the new Chairman. Barrett led the NDP in August 1972 the first-ever election victory and sparked on September 15, 1972 WAC Bennett of the British Columbia Social Credit Party from which the province had ruled for twenty years.

During his tenure, Barrett sat through extensive government reforms. The rapid pace of legislation and falling tax revenues led to a resurgence of the opposition. 1976 Bennett managed in a by-election in the constituency of Vancouver East re- entry into the provincial parliament and belonged to this until 1984. On November 21, 1988, he was elected as MP for Esquimalt - Juan de Fuca to the Canadian House of Commons, where he was part of the Group of the New Democratic Party. In 1989, he competed unsuccessfully for the party presidency. In the general election on 25 October 1993 he was voted out, after which he retired from politics.
