Dave Frishberg

Dave Frishberg ( born March 23, 1933 Saint Paul, Minnesota ) is an American journalist and jazz musician (piano, vocals, composition).

Life and work

Frishberg refused as a child to learn classical piano, but was interested in boogie -woogie and blues. As a teenager he played in the house band at the Flame in St. Paul where Art Tatum, Billie Holiday, and Johnny Hodges appeared. He studied journalism at the University of Minnesota (MA 1955) and then did his military service in the Air Force from. In 1957 he moved to New York City where he worked as a radio journalist with WNEW before he was pianist break in Duplex in Greenwich Village. Then he became a member of the Quartet of Bud Freeman and also played with Gene Krupa, Kai Winding, Carmen Leggio and Eddie Condon. In the next few years he accompanied singers like Carmen McRae, Odetta Jimmy Rushing or Dick Haymes. He was known for songs he wrote like " Peel Me a Grape ," with the Blossom Dearie became a hit in 1962, and "I'm Hip ", which he wrote with Bob Dorough. Many other songs were also performed by Rosemary Clooney, Anita O'Day, Diana Krall, Meredith D' Ambrosio, Stacey Kent, John Pizzarelli and Mel Tormé. In the 1960s he also worked with Ben Webster as well as with Al Cohn and Zoot Sims.

In 1971 he moved to Los Angeles to write songs for the television show, The Funny Side, and for the film before Herb Alpert and Jack Sheldon joined even started singing in 1977 and struggled a solo career. He presented numerous solo albums and appears regularly in American and European jazz clubs. He also worked with Rebecca Kilgore. Since 1986 he lives with his family in Portland (Oregon ).

Stylistically, he moves on the plate You're A Lucky Guy in Swing, the sounds in the ensemble by swinging Dixieland, sung his lyrics are ironic, he controls a now rare Stridepianostil.
