David Bierens de Haan

David Bierens de Haan ( May 3, 1822 in Amsterdam, † August 12, 1895 in Leiden ) was a Dutch mathematician and historian of science.

Life

He was the son of the wealthy merchant Abraham Pieterszoon de Haan ( born December 12, 1795 in Amsterdam, † October 25, 1880 in Oostbroek h ) and Catharina Jacoba Bierens ( born January 9, 1797 in Amsterdam, † September 12, 1835 ibid ). After he had received different training, his father to study law appointed him. So he moved into 1841, the Athenaeum Illustre of Amsterdam. In the same year he enrolled on January 2, 1841 the University of Leiden. However, more his interest were the exact sciences, which he studied from September 1842. On 15 May 1847 he received his doctorate in Leiden at Gideon Verdam Janus ( 1802-1866 ) with the work of De lemniscata Bernouillana of Doctor of Philosophy. On August 28, 1848 he was professor of natural science and mathematics at the high school in Deventer. During that time he published a number of articles to primary education and mathematics.

On 5 May 1856 he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences, for the magazine from 1874 to 1893, he wrote thirty-three articles. He was also a member of the Dutch Society of Sciences at Haarlem, the provincial Utrechtschen Society of Arts and Sciences, the Batavian Society for Experimental Philosophy, foreign member of the imperial sciences in Kazan, a member of the Academie Imperiale of science, inscriptions et belles lettres in Toulouse, the British Association he continued advancement of science and the Danish society of Sciences. In 1857, he was Board of Education in Deventer and took care of there as a councilor from 1858 to different areas of training. On June 21, 1863, he was appointed by Royal Decree associate professor of mathematics and physics.

This position he resigned on December 25, 1863 with the introduction speech Over de magt van het zoogenaamd onbestaanbare in de wiskunde. On December 24, 1866, he was appointed a full professor. In this capacity, he also participated in the organizational tasks of the university and was 1872/73 as rector of the Alma Mater. He was co-editor since 1888 of the Oeuvres complètes by Christiaan Huygens and edited 1892, the algebra of Willem Smaasen ( 1820-1850 ). He possessed a very extensive library on mathematics, history of science and education, this is now in the Leiden University Library. His most important mathematical achievement was the publication of a very large integral table of definite integrals. On June 28, 1892 he was given emeritus status by Royal Decree from his chair and said goodbye on September 20, 1892 in retirement.

Bierens_de_Haan had on 31 March 1852 in Deventer. Johanna Catharina Justina de Schepper (* 13 April 1827 in Deventer, † January 25, 1906 in Haarlem ), the daughter of Jacob Wolter IJssel de Schepper ( born January 24, 1799 in Deventer, † April 23, 1850 ibid ), and Susanna Maria Petronella van Berkhout Teding ( born April 13, 1802 in Olst, † May 14 1880 in Heemstede ), married.
