David Jenkins (bishop)

David Edward Jenkins ( born January 26, 1925 in Bromley, Kent ) is a British clergyman of the Church of England, which was 1984-1994 Bishop of Durham, and, as such, as a member of the House of Lords belonged. Since his retirement he serves as Assistant Bishop of Ripon and Leeds.

Life

After visiting the St Dunstan 's College in Catford Jenkins earned a degree in theology and then worked as a lecturer at the University of Oxford. At times, he also worked as a chaplain and a Fellow at the city's Queen's College, and for the World Council of Churches and the William Temple Foundation.

In 1966 he had stopped and he gave lectures about the incarnation of God, which appeared in 1967 under the title of The Glory of Man as a book by John Bampton named editing at the University of Oxford. Most recently, he took over in 1979 a professor of theology at the University of Leeds and taught there until 1984.

In 1984 he was appointed as the successor of John Stapylton Habgood Bishop of Durham, and held that post until his resignation and subsequent appointment of Michael Turnbull 1994. His ordination to the bishop took place on July 6, 1984 in York Minster. During this time he was an ex officio member of the House of Lords. His appointment as bishop was seen controversial because of its numerous dissenting opinions to official positions of the Church of England. Jenkins explained, for example, that he did not believe in a bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ or the virgin birth.

After his resignation as Bishop of Durham, he was Assistant Bishop of Ripon and Leeds and continued to represent numerous in public controversial opinions. In 2005 he hit the headlines after he publicly as the first clergyman of the Church of England, the partnership of two gay men blessed, one of which was a self- vicar.
