David Leland
David Leland ( born April 20, 1947 in Cambridge, England ) is a British film director, screenwriter and actor.
Life
After several small roles as an actor in British films and television series began in 1981 as a screenwriter his collaboration with director Alan Clarke. Especially her film "Made in Britain" (1982 ) was praised by critics and won the 1984 international television award "Prix Italia ". With this film, the actor Tim Roth was known. In 1986 he wrote the screenplay for the drama " Mona Lisa". This film with Bob Hoskins in the lead role was directed by Neil Jordan. Leland was nominated for a Golden Globe and the Writers Guild of America. Another film from 1986 was "Personal Service". This film is about Cynthia Payne, a woman who had taken care with her private brothel sensation and scandal. Directed by Terry Jones, Julie Walters starred in the title role. While " Personal Service " Cynthia Payne describes as adults, based Leland's directorial debut "Wish You Were Here - I wanted you were here " from 1987 loosely based on Payne's youth and childhood memories. This film was a surprise hit at the Cannes Film Festival in 1987 and made the hitherto unknown actress Emily Lloyd internationally known. David Leland won the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes and the 1988 BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay. Leland's next film as director, " Checking Out " (1989 ) ( with Jeff Daniels) and "The Big Man" ( 1990) ( with Liam Neeson ) were both with the critics and with audiences through. After it was quiet around David Leland for several years, he returned in 1998 to the director's chair back. His film " Land Girls " ( Land Girls ) ( with Rachel Weisz ) at the Berlinale and got good reviews. Work in recent years, he reinforced for television, where especially his involvement in the television miniseries "Band of Brothers" highlight ( about soldiers in World War II ) and his directing at tribute concert for George Harrison "Concert for George " are. For the latter work he received the 2005 Grammy Award.
David Leland is married and has five children: Chloe, Abigail (both seen in Wish You Were Here ), Rosie, Jacob and Grace. David Leland's daughter Chloe was in 2005 with the documentary " Walking with Monsters " her directorial debut.
