David Nibert

David Alan Nibert (* 1953) is an American writer and sociologist of Human Animal Studies at Wittenberg University. ( Springfield, Ohio)

Having previously been established in animal ethics by the works of Richard Ryder, Peter Singer and Tom Regan, a theory of animal rights, Nibert was one of the first who examined the human-animal relationship from a sociological perspective under these new circumstances. He established with Anna Williams and many more a "Section on Animals and Society " at the American Sociological Association and in 2005 was awarded the " Prize for outstanding research ."

Starting from a critique of Speziesismusbegriffs these authors, he notes in his book Animal Rights / Human Rights, the treatment of animals and human marginalized group by privileged groups in an analogy, which he calls oppression. In contrast to Speziesismusbegriff, such as Peter Singer, speciesism Nibert understands not only as a "non unjustifiable prejudice against members of other species ", but as an ideology whose function is to rationalize and legitimize a rejection ratio. Similar to the analysis of Robert Blauner, who examined racism as an ideology, is Nibert presents to the position that prejudice and discrimination are certainly important elements of a social construction process ' of speciesism.
