David Rosen (rabbi)

David Shlomo Rosen ( born 1951 in Newbury, Berkshire, England) is the third son of the rabbi Kopul Rosen, founder of the Carmel College in Oxfordshire, England. He received his school and academic education in England and Israel.

Life

He served in the Israeli armed forces and was a rabbi at the stationed troops in the Sinai. In 1975 he became rabbi of the largest Orthodox Jewish Congregation of South Africa ( Green and Sea Point Hebrew Congregation, Cape Town ). He was also a judge on the Beth Din ( rabbinical court ) in Cape Town and Founder and Chairman of the Cape Inter -Faith Forum, the interreliösen Council of Jews, Christians and Muslims in Cape Town.

After that Rosen was from 1979 to 1985 Chief Rabbi of Ireland. In 1985 he returned to Israel and became dean of the Pinchas Sapir Center for Jewish Education and Culture in Jerusalem and finally Professor of Jewish Studies at the Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies. In 1997 he became director of the Anti-Defamation League in Israel.

Rose is active in a number of organizations and forums that promote the relations between Judaism and other world religions: Consultant for inter-religious affairs at the Chief Rabbinate of Israel; Board member of the King Abdullah bin Abd al- Aziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue; Co - President of the World Conference of Religions for Peace; Honorary President of the International Council of Christians and Jews; Member of the Council of Imams and Rabbis World Congress of for Peace; and, since 2001, International Director of the Department for Interreligious Affairs of the American Jewish Committee. From 2005 to 2009 he also directed the International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations ( IJCIC ).

David Rosen is with Sharon, nee Rothstein, married and has three daughters with her, Yakarah, Gabriella and Amirit.

Awards

For his contribution to Jewish- Catholic relations in November 2005 he became the first Israeli citizen and first Orthodox rabbi of Pope Benedict XVI. appointed Commander of St Gregory. In the same year he was awarded the Mount Zion Award. In December 2006, Rosen was the Raphael Lemkin Human Rights Award for founding the organization Rabbis for Human Rights. In 2010 he was elevated to Commander of the Order of the British Empire ( CBE).
