David Rumsey (New York)

David Rumsey ( born December 25, 1810 in Salem, Washington County, New York, † March 12, 1883 in Bath, Steuben County, New York) was an American lawyer, judge and politician.

Career

David Rumsey attended school in Auburn ( New York) and then the Hobart College in Geneva (New York). He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1831 and then began to practice in Bath. He was 1840-1844 as guardianship and estate Richter ( surrogates ) operates. He also held many local offices.

Rumsey was elected as a Whig in the 30th and 31st U.S. Congress, where he worked between March 4, 1847, and March 3, 1851. After the American Civil War he was in 1867 as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of New York. In addition, he was a member of the Commission, which presented the 1872 Amendment to the Constitution of New York. Rumsey 1873 for associate judge (associate justice) at the New York Supreme Court appointed, there to fill an existing vacancy. In the autumn of the following year he was elected to the same office.

His house, better known as the Campbell - Rumsey House, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
