David Teniers the Younger

David Teniers ( baptized December 15, 1610 in Antwerp, † April 25, 1690 in Brussels) was a Flemish painter.

Life

Teniers main teacher was his father, David Teniers the Elder. Later he was influenced by Peter Paul Rubens and Adriaen Brouwer. In 1633 he was inducted into the Guild of St. Luke of Antwerp, 1645 he was dean of the guild.

In 1637 he married Anna Brueghel, a daughter by Jan Brueghel the Elder. ; Groomsman was Rubens. Teniers also son of the same David Teniers III. (* July 10, 1638, † February 11, 1685 ) did not attain the notoriety of his father. In his capacity as Tapisseriemaler its importance lies in the field of decorative tapestry.

Teniers was appointed in 1651 as court painter in Brussels. As such, he was responsible for the art collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm. For this he created in 1660 the " Theatrum Pictorium ," the first illustrated catalog of a collection of paintings at all. In addition, he founded in 1664 the Antwerp Academy. David Teniers the Younger was in his almost 80 years of life, very productive, hundreds of his works have survived, they hang as good as any well-known art gallery in. Work

Teniers created, among other peasant tap-room scenes with drinkers, smokers and card players in addition to subjects such as festivals, soldiers guard-rooms, alchemists and witches kitchen - a total of about 800 images.
