David Tremlett

David Tremlett ( born February 13, 1945 in St. Austell, Cornwall, United Kingdom, lives in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom ) is a British contemporary sculptor, installation artist, photographer and conceptual artist, known for his wall drawings and installations.

Life and work

David Tremlett visited the Falmouth College of Art from 1962 to 1963, before studying sculpture at the Birmingham School of Art from 1963 to 1966 and thereafter at the Royal College of Art in London. In the early 1970s he toured North America and Australia from 1978 to 1987, the Middle East and Africa.

In the 1970s, Tremlett became popular as an artist, along with artists such as Richard Long and Gilbert and George. Tremlett began his wall drawings in 1969. Since the 1980s, he worked primarily with pastel chalks. Sometimes his art is only created temporarily until it is painted or weathered, often there are permanent wall drawings in terms of interior design. He has developed on his extensive travels in its shape. He often used geometric shapes or characters that he borrowed from other cultures.

On the trips, especially to Africa and Asia, developed Tremlett and artist's books. In the production of his books David Tremlett often works with local printers, so that even in terms of materials and printing techniques to create unique artists' publications.

In 1972 he was a participant in the installation Documenta 5 in Kassel in the Department of Individual Mythologies: Overview - Performances - Activities - Changes.

In 1992 he was shortlisted for the Turner Prize for his numerous wall drawings he had created all over the world. Also at the Kestner -Gesellschaft in Hanover, he has worked. Since the late 1970s he worked on murals for prominent buildings, for example, the British Embassy in Berlin (his biggest ever of 16 x 46 meters ), at the British Council building in Nairobi and for the Capella delle Brunate in La Morra Barolo, along with his friend Sol Lewitt.

In 2006, he created stained glass windows for the church of St. Peter and Paul in Villenauxe -la- Grande, France. Tremlett's work has been shown internationally in many private and public galleries and museums, including, without limitation, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Musee des Beaux Arts in Grenoble, the Pecci Museum in Prato, Italy, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

In September 2011, the central staircase was designed by David Tremlett at the Tate Britain in London. The wall drawing "Drawing for Free Thinking" will be on permanent display at least until 2016 in the important museum.
