Dawei
Division
Dawei, formerly Tavoy ( burmese ထားဝယ်မြို့ ), is a port city in southern Myanmar at the mouth of the river of the same name and the capital of Tanintharyi Division.
The estimated population in January 2005 was 137,000.
Location
Dawei is located at the mouth of the eponymous river, which flows here as estuary in the Andaman Sea.
Economy
The city is situated in a rural area, is operated in the cultivation of rice and wood percussion. Also in the vicinity iron, tin and tungsten mines. Tavoy is the center for rice processing and sawmilling in southern Myanmar. Again, rubber is obtained.

History
Tavoy was in the 15th century and later the capital of a small kingdom own, but was always of Burma and Siam (now Thailand) competitive. 1751 was Siam here to create a smaller port. 1824 Tavoy came under British control. In 1989, the English names Tavoy was renamed in Dawei.
