Dazu Huike

These Huike (Chinese太祖 慧 可, Jap same letters; Taiso Eka ) is the second patriarch of Chan Buddhism in China. His life data are 484-590 AD, according to another source 487-593. His immediate predecessor was Bodhidharma.

There are several legends, the second patriarch concerning: When the monk Huike Master Bodhidharma sought to become his student, looking this, the staring meditated against the wall, not on. It began to snow and Huike did not move from the spot until he was completely covered with snow. Still gave him the master no attention. Since Huike cut an arm off as a sign of his determination and was adopted by Bodhidharma as a student. Huike said, "Master, my mind is full of trouble, please bring it to rest. " Bodhidharma replied, " Show me your mind and I will pacify him! " Huike hesitated and said he could not find his mind. Then Bodhidharma said, "You see, I've calmed him down. " What Huike attained enlightenment. Bodhidharma was Huike as the first Chinese patriarch of the dignity and put the Lankavatara Sutra to the heart.
