DB Class 66

The two new series locomotives were 66 passenger tender locomotives of the German Federal Railroad.

The Series 66 was designed for Eilgüterzugdienst and the passenger train service on the main and branch lines of the German Federal Railroad. A top speed of 100 km / h and an axle load of 15 t offered the best conditions. You should replace the Länderbahn types of series 38.10, 78 and 93. Due to the increasing competition from diesel locomotives, the two examples of the class were 66 individual pieces, though they met all expectations and were considered very successful design. The Series 66 was the penultimate steam locomotive series, which was built as part of the DB - construction program.

The vehicles were equipped with a welded high efficiency boiler with combustion chamber, roller bearings, a mixer preheater and one welded plate frame. There was a great emphasis was placed on the working conditions of engineer and fireman, had the series 66 is a completely enclosed cab, skylights, heated floors and upholstered seats with backrest. From the autumn of 1957 both locomotives were equipped with devices for the push-pull operation.

The locomotive with number 66 001 in 1967 out of service and parked in casting due to engine damage, the second copy was retired in 1968.

Whereabouts

The locomotive 66 002 was purchased after they are decommissioned by the German Society for Railway History eV and is currently based in the Railway Museum Bochum- Dahlhausen.
