DB Class 724

The inductive magnet to test car 724 001 rebuilt prototype VT 95 906 in June 1981 in Regensburg

As series 724 called the German Federal Railroad cabooses for testing inductive magnet - gap devices. There were three cars in this series.

History

With the increasing use of inductive train control a measuring vehicle was necessary to verify the correct functioning of the track facilities. For this purpose a Uerdinger Schienenbus the previous series was retired with the vehicle number VT 95 906 and rebuilt in the repair plant in Kassel for the trolley for inductive magnet - gap devices on 21 June 1963. The mileage of the vehicle amounted to 1.236 million km at this time. As 6205 Wt denotes, he participated in the February 25, 1964 at Bahnbetriebswerk Wuppertal his service and replaced the previously reproached for this purpose measuring trolley. From 1 January 1968, the railcar in computer-readable numbering scheme was known as the 724001-3.

As the train control system Inductive found proliferation, a vehicle soon enough any more. In 1972, the retired VT were therefore again in the Re Kassel 795 144 and 471 also converted into test vehicles and called 724002-1 and 724003-9.

On January 18, 1986, the first of the three measurement used cars, 724 001, retired at Bw Heidelberg. The vehicle was over 20 years sidings, last before the Diet of Worms roundhouse, positioned behind and fell into disrepair. 2007, the railcar, the last remaining pre-series VT 95, purchased from the volcanic Eifel track and transported to Gerolstein. There is to be a medium-term restoration. The other two vehicles of the DB Class 724, which had been decommissioned in 2000, remained intact. 724 003 was visually set back as VT 95 in the original condition and placed as such in Wuppertal- Cronenberg as a memorial.

Technology

In the course of the conversion from Uerdinger Schienenbus for inductive magnet test car next to the measurement technology, but additional work lights have been installed and partly closed side window. To check the safety devices had the inductive magnet test car test magnets, with which the function of route setup was checked. First received 724 001 only one of these test magnets. 1971, however, a second magnet was on the other side of the vehicle installed and significantly simplifies the operation: Input and exit signals could now be checked in a single operation, previously accounted Needful reacting.

The release of the vehicles turn of the millennium had several reasons: The railcars were now getting on in years, the maximum speed was low and disabled in many places the control operation on routes with high allowable speed of the train control had been introduced and even on slower routes, the use of digital punctual automatic train mandatory. For this new safety technology, however, the inductive magnet test car series 724 were not suitable. Today, modern test vehicles such as the RAILab - sets make it possible to review of all safety devices at the same time the digital collection of all relevant operating parameters of the track position and allow high measurement speeds. In some distance magnets but wait after the termination of the inductive magnet test car of technicians per handset.
