DB Class 78.10

The two series vehicles 78.10 of the German Federal Railways have been developed on the basis of two vehicles of the Prussian P 8 by the company Krauss -Maffei and the repair shop Minden. They tried it, especially for use in the suburban and city railway to improve the acceleration values of the vehicles.

The running and engine and boiler of the two vehicles with the original operating numbers 38 2919 and 38 in 2990 remained virtually unchanged. Was redesigned the cab. There was also a short tender, which was coupled by a drawbar to the locomotive and improved runnability when reversing. The products classified as tender locomotives locomotives wrong initially in the Munich area, later in Augsburg and finally on Lake Constance.

More P8 engines were not rebuilt because were with the phasing out of the war locomotives from the DB to 1954 in large numbers free Wannentender, which could be coupled with the P8. Thus, a conversion to wendezugfähigen locomotives with a Rückwärtsgeschwidigkeit of 85 km / h was also made possible by simpler means.

Thus, the two locomotives 78 1001 and 78 in 1002 remained the only of its kind and have already retired again in 1961.
