DB Class V 80

The V 80 series marked the first newly developed Dieselloktyp the German Federal Railways for the route service, which was designated in 1968 as the class 280.

History

This locomotive type was built as the first newly developed diesel locomotive for mainline service of the German Federal Railroad ( DB). The series has been built in the years 1951/1952 in a number of only ten copies, but formed the basis for all further developments of the DB in this sector.

The locomotives were initially distributed to the depots Frankfurt and Bamberg. In Frankfurt ( Main), they came in the suburbs of Frankfurt ( Main ) Hbf -Bad Homburg vd height or to Kronberg used and also attracted express trains between Frankfurt (Main) and Cologne. The Bamberg machines came in the Nuremberg suburban services as well as on various branch lines around Bamberg used. From 1963, all locomotives in Bamberg were summarized and took over passenger and freight train services on many branch lines in northern Bavaria.

The branch line dying in the 1970s meant that the DB could disconnect 1976-1978 of the only ten copies, as well as sufficient locomotives of comparable V 100 series were available.

Construction

Typical of the appearance of usable in both directions cab was in the middle of the vehicle, which towered above the engine rooms. The combination of a single mid driver's cab with two fully enclosed, indoor walk ends in the German locomotive unique.

In the basic design, the V had 80 items that were used in all subsequent Dieselloktypen: medium -speed diesel engine, hydraulic transmission, power transmission to the axles by means of drive shafts. Originally three different engines with 800 to 1000 hp were installed; later the installation was carried out by 1,100 hp MTU engines. All engines were supercharged V12 four-stroke diesel engines.

Whereabouts

The locomotives of the series 280 were sold to various private railways and rail construction companies in Italy after they are decommissioned, for the most part. A copy of the V 80 002, which entertained the German railway itself as a museum locomotive, was the big roundhouse fire of the Nuremberg Transport Museum on 17 October 2005, a victim of the flames. Shortly thereafter, all spent diesels of museum holdings, were scrapped.

Since mid-October 2005, the first built by Krauss -Maffei V 80 is again in Germany. The locomotive V 80 001 was from a collector, which also includes the museum locomotive 212 203, purchased and transferred from Italy back to Germany.

As a replacement for the 2005 burned in Nuremberg V 80 002, the DB Museum received in June 2008 in exchange for a diesel locomotive class 216 of its own stock at the time the last -built V 80 V 80 005 over appropriated by its Italian owner. It has been worked up until April 2013 in Meiningen Steam Locomotive Works in the original paint with computer lettering on the outside. V80 007 has been transferred from Italy to victories, and been there aufgearbetet visually again. ( August 2013 )
