DB Class VT 10.5

The VT 105 was developed by the German Federal Railroad in the early 1950s articulated a genus. For the first time, this series was presented at the International Transport Exhibition in Munich in 1953.

Construction

The design comes from the Office of the rapid transit pioneer Franz Kruckenberg. Kruckenberg used his experience from the construction of the Rail Zeppelin and the SVT 137 155 in order to achieve high speeds through extreme lightweight. By the execution of aluminum alloys and thus a weight of 0.92 t per seat put the VT 10 501 a unique low record. The VT 10 501 was created in shell construction, connections were welded. The VT 10 551 was produced in combined Schalen-/Spantenbauweise with riveted connections.

Under the class VT 105 two trains were classified:

  • VT 10 501 ( "Senator" ): a seven-part unit train (two power cars, five trailer) for the Tagverkehr
  • VT 10 551 ( " comet " ): originally a seven-part unit train (two power cars, five trailer) for the night traffic, 1954 was another middle cars as dining cars and 1956 cars as a means Salonwagen added.

The 17,850 mm long end cars and 12,200 mm long intermediate cars were connected with bellows, rubber outer skins were mounted flush. The passages were almost the entire width of the car and allowed in the car seat a clear view through the train. The seats were arranged in 2 1 with center aisle, most places were opposite with table.

The sleeper had beds in 1st class and 2nd class compartments as well as reclining seats.

Specifications

The VT 10 501 was built by Linke- Hofmann -Busch in 1953 for the German Federal Railroad. It was planned as a seven-part train, but was extended to eight cars after the first test. The two intermediate cars possessed a common Jacob - axis, only the end cars had two-axle drive racks.

The VT 10 551 was built in 1953 for the German Sleeping Car and Dining Car Company of Wegmann in Kassel and adopted by the German Federal Railways on 1 January 1955. The intermediate cars were connected via two-axle bogies of Jacob, the end cars had two-axle drive racks.

Each motor car was D 1548 G equipped with two MAN diesel engines, type, each with 118 kW of power. Later, power was increased to 154 kW per engine. The original version was thus 120 km / h fast, the later version reached 160 km / h For the power supply of the two train diesel engines were incorporated each 92 kW. The power transmission was hydraulic with a mechanical four-speed transmission.

Operation

The trains went with the summer timetable in May 1954 on regular service. The Tagzug VT 10 501 Ft ran as a 41/42 "Senator" on the route Frankfurt ( Main) -Hamburg in a one-day round, the night train as Ft 49/50 " Comet " on the between Hamburg and Basel. Since only one set was also available from the night train, perverted the " comet " only every other day per direction.

The VT 10 501 had already after two months of field for five months in the workshop, also in 1955, he was one third of the year at AW Nürnberg. In 1956 he was removed from the plan, he was first processed by the manufacturer in Salzgitter, 1958 in AW Nürnberg. The work was still set.

The VT 10 551 was from October 1957 AW Nuremberg, January 1958 from the manufacturer in Kassel.

The driving characteristics of the trains were good, as disadvantageous, however, turned out the concept with six engines per train. This caused high maintenance costs. Since in any case only two trains were in service, the DB decided to phase out these traits. The VT 10 501 was taken from the regular driving operation in November 1956 and is expected to allow the short-lived train of the DB have been. He was Eyes on June 12, 1959.

The night train was mid- April 1958 z and put out December 20, 1960.

Although both trains were only a short time in use, incorporates a lot of experience to the construction of the TEE trainsets VT 11.5.

Whereabouts

The intermediate car VT 10 551i is still available. After he stood for years in the eastern apron of the Nuremberg main station, it is used by the Nuremberg railway enthusiasts as a clubhouse. He stands next to the Bahnhof Nürnberg -Stein on the railway line Nuremberg - Crailsheim.
