De Havilland Giant Moth

The de Havilland DH61 Giant Moth was a single-engine, blank out as a double -decker transport aircraft of the British manufacturer de Havilland Aircraft Company in the 1920s. It provided space for eight passengers.

History

After the de Havilland DH50 had been successfully introduced in Australia, the desire arose for a larger successor. De Havilland then developed in just ten weeks, a plane whose frame structure largely consisted of spruce. As skin served with fabric strung plywood. In the closed cabin there were six fixed and two folding seats and two large luggage compartments. The pilot sat in an open cockpit behind the wings. As drive either served a Bristol Jupiter or Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar engine.

The first flight of the prototype took place in December 1927. After completion of the test flights, the aircraft came to Melbourne to take up the line service of MacRobertson Miller Aviation between Adelaide and Broken Hill from March 2, 1928. The baptismal name of this aircraft, Canberra, initially served as a type designation. Only later they decided on the name Giant Moth.

Nine of the ten aircraft delivered were the number DH61. The tenth came in individual parts to Canada, was assembled there and put into service as DHC.141. The Western Canada Air Lines was awarded two equipped with floats models. Three machines led by the airmail service of the Australian Aerial Services and Qantas. Another model acquired the Daily Mail to bring their image rapporteur on locations across the UK to be able to. This aircraft was therefore equipped with a darkroom.

From the mid- 1930s, the Giant Moth were decommissioned and replaced by twin-engine transport aircraft.
