De Young (museum)

The MH de Young Museum, named after the newspaper publisher MH de Young, is an art museum in San Francisco Golden Gate Park.

History

The museum was founded in 1895 as a swap of the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894. After extensive renovation work in 1949 and severely damage the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, it has its present appearance after a new opening in 2005.

Collection

The museum's collections include works of African, Oceanic and Pre-Columbian Art, fine and applied arts from the United States, graphic work, and textiles.

The collection of American art with paintings by, among others, John Singleton Copley, John Vanderlyn, Thomas Cole, George Caleb Bingham, Martin Johnson Heade, Frederic Edwin Church, Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent, William Michael Harnett, Mary Cassatt, Charles Demuth, Georgia O'Keeffe, Grant Wood, Stuart Davis and Richard Diebenkorn is the most famous on the U.S. West Coast.
