Deacon Blue

Deacon Blue is a Scottish band that was founded in 1985 in Glasgow.

History

In 1982, the youth club leader and teacher Ricky Ross joined bassist Ewan Vernal and the band Woza. The band was only known in the Glasgow area and played in the opening act of the Waterboys, but could not win a recording contract. Ross wrote after the release of Woza 1983 further songs, founded in 1985 with Vernal a new band, bringing James Prime on keyboards in the band, who had played briefly for the Altered Images. The name " Deacon Blue" is the title of Deacon Blues band Steely Dan borrowed from their album Aja.

Muff Winwood, 1986 A & R Manager at CBS Records signed the band for the music label. In November 1986, the recording of the debut album produced by Jon Kelly Raintown began. The album also sang Ross' former girlfriend and future wife, Lorraine McIntosh, which was not until 1988 that a permanent member of Deacon Blue. In March 1987 the single Dignity was released in May of the same year the album. Both could, in spite of prominent guest musicians on the album, such as not placing Chris Rea and members of London Beat, in the hit parade.

1988, the single was re-released Dignity and peaked in the UK Top 40 Rank 31 Also, the debut album from which the single came in 1991 placed at the British album charts and reached number 14 and received an award with a platinum record. With When Will you ( Make my Telephone Ring) in a new version and Chocolate Girl two more singles were released and Deacon Blue went in the summer of 1988 with Fairground Attraction on tour. In October came with the Single Real Gone Kid of success in the home. The single reached number 8 in the UK Top 40 in March 1989 published the second, again produced by Jon Kelly, album When The World Knows Your Name reached the top chart in the UK and number 56 in Germany and two platinum records.

In 1990, the band participated at the Big Day in Glasgow in front of 250,000 spectators and Ross took care of the deceased on the occasion of the 1988 photographer Oskar Marzaroli recorded charity record, The Tree and the Bird and the Fish and the Bell. From the photographer came the cover photo Cityscapes - Looking South From Park Terrace (1960 ) for the critically acclaimed and compared with Prefab Sprout debut album Raintown. CBS published 1990 Ooh Las Vegas is a compilation album, which was awarded by the British Phonographic Association with a Golden Record.

1991 again recorded with producer Jon Kelly, but in a recording studio in Paris, the album Fellow Hoodlums and released on Columbia Records, which earned three more chart singles with Your Swaying Arms, Twist and Shout and Closing Time. Appeared in 1993 at Columbia, the studio album Whatever you say, say Nothing, 1994, in the following year awarded two platinum records compilation Our Town - The Greatest Hits of Deacon Blue.

After the dissolution in 1994, Ross released several solo albums. Deacon Blue reunited in the same occupation in 1999 and released more albums. In June 2004 guitarist Graeme Kelling died from pancreatic cancer. 2012 appeared the album The Hipsters at Edsel.

Ricky Ross also wrote songs for other artists. He donating at High with James Blunt, when I'm all Over It Jamie Cullum and Will Young, KT Tunstall and Emma Bunton. He and his wife Lorraine, he forms the duo RossMcIntosh. Ross hosts the radio show Another Country for BBC Radio Scotland.
