Dean Smith (racing driver)

Dean Smith ( born March 2, 1988 in Stourbridge ) is a British racing driver. He joined in 2010 and 2011 in the GP3 Series.

Career

Like most racers began his career in karting Smith, in which he was active from 2001 to 2003. In 2004 he moved to Formula racing and was 15th in the British Formula BMW. A season later, he won the championship title in this series ahead of his compatriot Sam Bird. In 2006 he moved to the British Formula Renault, finishing at the end of the season in ninth place overall. 2007 Smith remained in this championship and was runner-up three wins behind Duncan Tappy. He also took part in two races of the North European Formula Renault.

2008 Smith joined the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup on and finished the season in 17th place overall. The same Overall rank he attained in the Western European Formula Renault, although he took part in this series only at individual races. In addition, he competed in two races in the British Formula 3 Championship. 2009 Smith returned back to the British Formula Renault and won the third attempt with seven wins the championship before James Calado. He also participated in two races of the Formula Renault 2.0 Euro Cups in part. At the end of the year, Smith was honored for his achievements with the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award.

Smith 2010 entered for Carlin in the newly founded GP3 Series and finished with a third place as best result seventh overall. 2011 Smith moved to the Addax team and denied his second GP3 season. Since he had budget problems, he signed a contract from race to race. With regular points finishes in the first half of the season he was given the opportunity to second- last race weekend for the Addax team to compete. For the end of the season he was replaced by Vittorio Ghirelli. With a second place as best result Smith finished the season as the best pilot of his team in twelfth place in the drivers' standings.
