Decaborane is a chemical compound selected from the group of the boranes.
Production and representation
Decaborane arises, among other boranes in the thermal decomposition of diborane.
Properties
Decaborane is a colorless solid with a strong odor, which is not very stable in air. It is soluble in organic solvents such as carbon tetrachloride, which must be avoided, because such solutions can explode at vibration. Decaborane is suitable for a variety of reactions. With Lewis bases such as diethyl sulfide and acetonitrile, it provides compounds of the type B10H12 [S ( C2H5) 2] 2 from which are available with acetylene and its derivatives carboranes. Decaborane has a monoclinic crystal structure with space group C2 / c.
Use
Decaborane contained in rocket propellants, explosives and pyrotechnics and is used as a catalyst in olefin polymerization.
