Definity (film recorder)

DEFINITY is a based on LCD technology, digital film recorder, which mainly is used in the film industry. The system is manufactured and sold by CCG Digital Image Technology, the successor to the film recorder branch of Agfa- Gevaert.

At its launch in 2004, Definity presented with its LCD imager as a departure from the solutions previously used in the movie recording, the mainly resorted to analog technologies, such as cathode ray tubes.

Until then LCD technology, despite their high potential, as largely unsuitable for digital movie recording: Previous attempts had failed, inter alia, on to a low color depth (8 bits instead of the required in the film industry 10 and 12 bit), lack of color saturation or to low exposure rate to intermediate material. The monochrome LCD imager that is being used in Definity, circumvents these problems, inter alia, by the fact that he combines sharp-edged dichroic filter, and is partially fed with light in the near infrared. The required bit depth is achieved by the multiple exposure of 8-bit frames.

As part of the Digital Intermediate Definity is often used together with color management systems such as Base Light of Light film.

At NAB 2010 in Las Vegas, a new CCG, based on LED technology light source for Definity. Until then used CCG a custom- finished version of the Osram Planon gas discharge lamp.
