Deir el Qamar

Dair al - Qamar (Arabic دير القمر, Monastery of the Moon ') is a village in the southern province of Mount Lebanon, located near Beiteddine, about 45 km south-east of Beirut and 16 km from the Mediterranean Sea in about 850 m above sea level.

Dair al - Qamar was the capital of Mount Lebanon under the reign of the Emir Fakhreddin II until his death 1635th The village is known for the mosque with its octagonal minaret, whose beginnings go back to the year 1493 and the oldest existing mosque in Lebanon is. During its heyday, the city was a center of Arabic literature.

Since 1945, the city is a protected monument. The village is mostly inhabited by Christians and one of the few Christian villages after the Lebanese civil war in the area. The former president Camille Chamoun was born here.
