Delaware Sängerbund

The Delaware Choral Society is a German -American club near Newark ( Delaware) in the USA. The club has approximately 800 members, who meet at the clubhouse in Ogletown (Delaware). In addition to a choir the club still include the following groups: a Bavarian folk dance group ( "Enzian Folk Dance Group " ), a women's group (the " Ladies of the Delaware Choral Society " ), youth soccer teams (the " DSB Kickers "), a youth group and a Genealogy Group. The association also offers German courses for adults and children.

History

The Delaware Choral Society was founded in March 1853 by 16 German immigrants as a men's choir. The club quickly developed into an important social focal point for its members, their families and newly arrived immigrants. The clubhouse (known as " German Hall " ) was from 1883 to 1965 in the 205 East Sixth Street in Wilmington ( Delaware). After that, the club moved to its current clubhouse in Ogletown (Delaware) due to the increasing urban development. The Club has run continuously since 1853, making it one of the oldest clubs in Delaware.

The Delaware Choral Society and the German community in Wilmington hosted its first festival in September 1883 Schuetzen Park in Wilmington. The festival was also held over the next few years there. For the 50th anniversary of the club club hosted a popular festival continues, this time in the new Brandywine Springs Park. The festival was continued until the year 1912. As the Delaware Choral Society in 1978 its 125th anniversary in a big marquee celebrated to accommodate all guests, the idea of an annual folk festival was reborn. The first Oktoberfest in Munich tradition was organized in 1979. Since then, the Oktoberfest the club has become an established tradition in Delaware.

Events

At two annual events of the Delaware Choral Society shares its German tradition and culture with the population: The "Oktoberfest" ( on the third weekend in September ) and the " Christkindlmarkt " ( on the second Saturday in November ).

The Oktoberfest of the Delaware Choral Society is named after the famous Oktoberfest in Munich. About 15,000 visitors each year visit the large marquee on the club grounds to German musicians and brass bands, dance to try homemade potato salad and sauerkraut and to experience the performances of the shoe-slapping the Bavarian folk dance. For children Carousel rides are offered.
