Delungra, New South Wales

Delungra is a small town in the northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales. It is located 33 km west of Inverell and 43 km north-east of Bingara in Inverell Shire Local Government Area.

History

1907 Delungra became a town and, therefore, celebrated her 100th birthday on Australia Day 2007. The former post office Reedy Creek was renamed on 11 June 1906 in Delungra.

Events

Delungra has two equestrian events of the year, the Campdrafting in March and an equestrian weekend in October. Ironically, in 2007 but had to be canceled because of this horse flu.

There are also a number of other events, such as a parade on Australia Day on January 26, or a Christmas parade with Christmas carols by candlelight. On April 25 and November 11, there are memorial services for the war dead.

Climate

For Delungra there are no official weather records, but the local post office has the rains since November 1924 registered. Previously, the station recorded Gunnee ( 8 km north of Delungra ) on rainfall from 1879 to 1924. The following statistics of the rainfall until September 2011, results in:

  • Highest Rainfall: 1319.6 mm ( 1879)
  • Lowest rainfall: 388.6 mm ( 1902)

The next automatic weather stations are 30 km east at Inverell Research Centre, and 109 km to the west at Moree Airport.

Traffic

Delungra is located on the Gwydir Highway, the Australian Route 38, across which also the northeastern part of the Fossickers Way.
