Demetrius II of Georgia

Dimitri II or Demetre II the Selbstaufopferer (* 1260, † 1289 ) was from 1270 to 1289 King of Georgia.

Life

When his father David VII Ulu died, Dimitri was still a minor. For him, led his uncle Sadun Mankaberdeli to 1278 the government. During his prudent reign and Dimitris active government the royal power grew stronger in Georgia again, and the country experienced a period of Mongol rule despite relative prosperity. Expression of this is the building of the grand Metekhi in Tbilisi.

As Dimitri is suspected by the Mongols of the waste, and the land is threatened with harsh reprisals, Dimitri delivers voluntarily from the Mongols in order to preserve Georgia before a new destruction. In the camp of the Mongol ruler of the Il- Khan Arghun ( 1284/91 ), he is tortured and beheaded. From the Georgian people he was nicknamed the beheaded or Selbstaufopferer.

Dimitri donated the Metekhi in Tbilisi.
