Democratic Party of the Atlantic

The Partido Democrático do Atlântico (PDA ) [ pɐɾtidu dɨmukɾatiku you ɐtlɐtiku ] to German Democratic Party of the Atlantic, is a separatist regional party in Portugal. The main policy objective of the party is a stronger autonomy of the two archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira, as compared to other overseas territories of the European Union.

The party was founded on 5 November 1979 and originated mainly from other, partly right, political groups such as the Frente de Libertação dos Açores. This feared after the Carnation Revolution in 1974, a Sovietization of Portugal and also demonstrated with bomb attacks her will continue to politically Portugal moving to the right.

Today, however, the party has little inlet, which is that the autonomy of the two island groups is already very largely. Both have their own island among other parliaments, can levy their own taxes and thus act largely independent of the continental government. In the regional elections in the Azores in 2004, the party received only 619 votes 248 votes (0.23 percent), in the elections of 2008 (0.69 percent). In the 2005 parliamentary elections, the PDA received 1618 votes (0.03 percent) and missed so much as a place in the Assembleia da República.
