Democratic Socialist Party (Ireland)

The Democratic Socialist Party (Irish At Páirtí Sóisialach Daonlathach ) was from 1972 to 1990 a small social democratic party in the Republic of Ireland. The party was founded in 1972, founded by Jim Kemmy, an Irish politician and member of the lower house, after he had left the Labour Party in the same year.

The party stood to the left of the Labour Party, was fierce opponent of Irish nationalist positions with respect to Northern Ireland and was aligned secularist. The party supported the legalization of contraception, divorce and abortion.

The party was able to win by Kemmy in Limerick, never a seat in the Irish House except the most and went to only in this constituency and one in Dublin. Although the political positions of many members of communist organizations attracted, the party never had a large membership. In 1990 the party dissolved by fusion with the Labour Party.
