Demotix

Demotix is a web portal and a photo agency of grassroots journalism. The agency is part of the U.S. media company Corbis Images.

The name Demotix derives from the Greek word "demos" or Δήμος = people. In the English " demotic " means " colloquial, popular, folk ".

Demotix was started by Turi Munthe and Jonathan Tepper in January 2009. Headquartered in London, with outside offices in Cairo, New York and Bangkok. The photo agency Corbis Images, which had invested in Demotix since 2011, the agency purchased in November 2011 completely in order to better integrate into their global news distribution.

Demotix offers independent journalists and amateurs can upload images directly to the portal. This daily photos of places and events are common, which are often not achieved in conventional ways. Demotix works with more than 30,000 active freelance professional photographers and amateur photographers, the nearly 60,000 images per month to provide (as of 2013). The company cooperates with journalists from many countries around the world. The copyrights of the photographic content can be sold to the mass media. The main objective of Demotix is to help establish contacts between independent journalists and traditional media.

In addition Demotix helps its employees in government agencies and companies in the accreditation.

Press card

Demotix is a separate press pass from his photographer. This approach is criticized by the UK Press Card Authority, as these great efforts has undertaken to establish a generally accepted press card. The organization provides instructions issued by Demotrix PressPass as recognition of amateur photographers. Demotix considers this criticism unfounded, since only supplier with at least 10 times since they get a press pass.

Awards

Demotix has won several international awards, including with the Media Guardian Innovation Award for Independent Media, 2009. The pictures of the company have already been used on title pages of the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and The Guardian, and were seen on CNN, NBC, BBC and other national news networks. Also German media such as Der Spiegel, Die Welt and Bild Zeitung rely on the material of Demotix.
