Dendrophryniscus berthalutzae

Dendrophryniscus is a South American genus of frogs and toads of the family of toads ( Bufonidae ). The species of this genus are known in English on the basis of the scientific genus name as tree toads. However, this can lead to confusion with the African tree toad of the genus Nectophryne or the spotted tree toad ( Pedostibes hosii ). Dendrophryniscus is native only to the Atlantic rainforests of Brazil.

Description

The toads of the genus Dendrophryniscus have a head-body length of 18 to about 28 millimeters. Your body is flat. You have a prolonged, seen from the side, pointed snout. Seen from above it appears slightly rounded.

Dendrophryniscus differs from the closely related genus Amazophrynella by the inconspicuous coloration of the ventral side of - in the latter it is depending on the type white, red-brown or orange. The tip of the fourth finger is enlarged at Dendrophryniscus, the inner finger is stunted.

Dissemination

Dendrophryniscus is native to the Atlantic rain forests in the south and southeast of Brazil.

Way of life

The toads of the genus Dendrophryniscus live in the lowlands. They are diurnal and feed mainly on ants, beetles, mites and springtails. The propagation takes place in the rainy season (November to May). Search for oviposition the females very small, temporary waters on, such as bromeliads, in the water- filled funnels the eggs are laid.

Taxonomy and systematics

Dendrophryniscus is regarded as a relatively basal genus within the family of toads. The type species of the genus is Dendrophryniscus brevipollicatus.

A 1941 first described by Melin Atelopus minutus small species from the Amazon basin was counted because of their similar morphological features long time as Dendrophryniscus minutus to the tree toads, however, in 2012 by Fouquet et al. outsourced bokermanni along with, also based in the Amazon region type Dendrophryniscus. The new genus was given the name Amazon Ella.
