Dénes Szécsi

Dénes Szécsi (* 1440 in Eger, Hungary, † February 1, 1465 in Esztergom ) was a Hungarian cardinal and the first Primate of Hungary.

Life

Dénes Miklós Szécsi, ( Desiderius Széchy, Dionysius ) also Zech, Zecho or Zechus was the sixth of eight children of Hungarian aristocrats Miklós Széchy de Felsõlendva ( magister tavernicorum ) and his wife Ilona Garai born. He studied at the University of Vienna in 1426 and 1433 at the University of Bologna where he received his doctorate in 1434 ( canon law ). Another study at the University of Padua joined them.

On August 21, 1438 was appointed Bishop of Nitra. On June 5, 1439, he was appointed Bishop of Eger. In the consistory of December 18, 1439 he was created a cardinal by Pope Eugene IV. On February 15, 1440 Cardinal Szécsi appointment was made to Metropolitan Archbishop of Esztergom. He has participated in the conclave of 1447, was elected to the Cardinal Tommaso Parentucelli Pope Nicholas V, entitled " Primate of Hungary " gave him and is still connected to the archbishopric of Esztergom.

In the provincial synod in 1450 in Esztergom, he sat down for the restoration of monastic discipline and encouraged to adhere to the celibacy. He built in 1453 the Basilica in Esztergom on again.

He died on February 1, 1465 and was buried in the cathedral of Esztergom.
