Denis Kapustin

Denis Viktorovich Kapustin (Russian Денис Викторович Капустин; born October 5, 1970 in Kazan ) is a former Russian track and field athlete. He was 1994 European Champion in the triple jump and won the 2000 Olympic bronze. At a height of 1.90 m his competition weight was 86 kg.

Starting yet for the Soviet Union was Kapustin European Junior Champion in 1989 and fourth at the Universiade 1991.

At the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart, he finished sixth with 17.19 m. At the European Indoor Championships in 1994 in Paris-Bercy he won with 17,35 m silver with nine centimeters behind his compatriot Leonid Voloshin. In the summer at the European Championships in Helsinki in 1994, he won with 17,62 m and seven centimeters ahead of Frenchman Serge Helan.

After two years Kapustin was weaker. During the 1997 World Championships in Athens with 17,59 m fourth, six inches behind the bronze medal of Aliecer Urrutia In Budapest at the European Championships in 1998 Kapustin won the silver medal with 17.44 meters, however, was more than half a meter behind the winner Jonathan Edwards. Shortly before the European Championships Kapustin had achieved his personal best 17.65.

At the 1999 World Championships in Seville Kapustin finished with 16.89 m in ninth place. In 2000, Kapustin won his only Russian title. At the Olympic Games in Sydney, he jumped 17.46 m and won the bronze medal with a centimeter behind the Cuban Yoel García.
