Dennis Hoey

Dennis Hoey ( born March 30, 1893 in London as Samuel David Hyams, † July 25, 1960 in Palm Beach, Florida) was a British actor. He is best known as Inspector Lestrade in the Sherlock Holmes series by Roy William Neill.

Life

The tall Hoey worked since 1918 after a less successful career as a singer at the theater in London. In 1927 he made ​​his first film appearance, and it was followed by a successful career as a character actor in England. End of the 1930s, Hoey moved to the U.S., where he first collaborated on Broadway in several productions, such as Mr. Rorchester 1937-1938 in Jane Eyre along with Katharine Hepburn in the title role. In the film, Hoey was then known along with numerous supporting roles, especially through the role of Inspector Lestrade in six of the Sherlock Holmes movies with Basil Rathbone. Even outside of these roles he often played commissioners or officials, for example, in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man and Tarzan and the Leopardenweib. From 1950 he retired from the film business increasingly Hoey and died in 1960 in California.

From 1933 to 1946 he was married to Josephine Hoey, the marriage ended in divorce. His son, Michael A. Hoey ( b. 1934 ) has been produced and directed numerous television movies.
