Dental compomer

A compomer is an in dentistry and dental technology used, still relatively new restorative material. It is a mixture of glass ionomer cements and composites.

According to this composition, a compomer combines the advantages but also the disadvantages of both filling materials. Compomers are tooth colored (opaque ) and are mainly used as an alternative to gold, amalgam or ceramic fillings, if only a limited supply of the tooth is required, for example when the primary dentition of children. The disadvantage is, compared to composites increased wear and the associated release of any allergenic ingredients in the oral cavity, there is also the risk of marginal gap formation due to material shrinkage, which can lead to secondary caries.
