Deportivo Saprissa

Club Deportivo Saprissa is a football club from Tibás, San José Province, Costa Rica. Saprissa is, next to the arch-rival LD Alajuelense, with 29 titles, the current record holder in the country.

History

The club was founded on July 16, 1935 by Roberto Fernández and plays in the top league of Costa Rica since 1949. The club was named after Ricardo Saprissa, the sponsor of the first jersey set. Since 1937 Purple is the color association. According to legend, this color was chosen after the original red-blue Dressen were washed once by mistake together.

From 29 March to 10 June 1959, the team went on a world tour Saprissas. During the world tour visited 38 places Saprissa in 25 countries and played 22 games, of which 14 were won.

Deportivo Saprissa is known that his team only consists of players from Costa Rica. Due to his skill level, the club was nicknamed El Monstruo Morado " the purple monster ". National 's main competitors is LD Alajuelense, and usually make both clubs the championship among themselves.

In 2003, the club was in a critical financial situation and so the Mexican businessman Jorge Vergara, who also took over already supported or had other football clubs, 67% of the shares in the club and was president of the same. In order to make the club more modern, he changed the traditional dark violet against a dark purple, introduced a new club crest change which, among other things, the monster was to be seen, and changed hands twice the mascot. Saprissa is currently one of the most successful clubs in the CONCACAF. 2005 Saprissa won for the third time the CONCACAF Champions Cup and thus took part in the FIFA Club World Cup 2005. In the Club World Cup, the team reached the 3rd place with a 3-2 win against Al- Ittihad of Saudi Arabia.

Saprissa in 2010 was honored by the IFFHS as the " team of the 20th century the CONCACAF zone."
