The Bastian is the title of a screenplay by Barbara Noack, which was filmed in 1972 and aired in 1973 as a 13 - part television series on ZDF. Noack then worked the script to a novel whose first edition appeared in 1974.

Content

The Bastian is about a teacher students in Munich who enjoys the freedom before the start of his first job after his last exam. He falls in love with a young doctor, he tried to conquer with its unconventional nature, which he finally succeeds. Bastian is very good-natured, and his willingness to help bring him more often in uncomfortable situations; so he lets a young mother, with whom he had a relationship years ago, live with him, and " refuge " finally to his girlfriend. At the end of the novel the reality catches up with him, and he has to face her in the form of his employment as an elementary school teacher in the Bavarian Forest.

Filming

The novel was filmed in 1972 under the direction of Rudolf Jugert with Horst Janson in the title role as a 13-part series and aired from July 2, 1973 at the eve of the ZDF program. In other roles have included Lina Carstens (as Bastian's enterprising grandmother ), Karin Anselm, Monika Schwarz and Friedrich von Thun to see. Played by Horst Janson as a lovable but self-willed, that, long- haired and rather messy young man - - The figure of Bastian also brought a more socially conservative set audience the otherwise still often scorned type of that " eternal student " closer, which many outdated rules no longer want to keep. The Bastian was up to 15 million viewers per episode one of the most successful series of German television history. Horst Janson is still identified by the public with this role.

The production design was realized by set designer Heinz Meyer Eick. In the apartment of Bastian many lovely details to support the character of Bastian and give an insight into the zeitgeist of the 1970s.

The complete series was released in 2005 on two DVDs ( runtime 330 min ), supplemented by interviews with Horst Janson and Barbara Noack.
