Der Große Ploetz

The Great Ploetz is a chronological and topographical data collection to world history, from prehistory and early history to the present day. For more than 100 years on the book market and is currently present in the 35th edition, The Great Ploetz is a standard reference work on the history.

History

The first edition of the Great Ploetz appeared in 1863 under the title extract the old, medieval and modern history as a guide and to repetitions and was designed by Karl Julius Ploetz ( 1819-1881 ) founded. As the immediate precursor of the 1863 published edition of the Great Ploetz, a bilingual publication apply: Les principales de l' histoire universal dates: Abstract of important dates, names and facts from the general world history. This 32-page " Ur - Ploetz " for the history lesson was created as chronological data collection of the most important world-historical events and appeared in 1855 when Friedrich August Herbig. 1880 went over the rights to the founded by Ploetz ' son in Berlin AG Ploetz publisher, who extended the brand Ploetz as a comprehensive historical reference and made known.

From 1964 to 1971 appeared in Ploetz -Verlag Würzburg known as the territories - Ploetz two-volume compendium history of the German lands. The first volume deals with the territories of the Holy Roman Empire until its end in 1806, the second volume of the German states since the Congress of Vienna. A planned third volume, which should include a list of all territories from the beginning of the Holy Roman Empire to the present day, has never been published.

The AG Ploetz Verlag, after the Second World War, first in Bielefeld, then based in Würzburg, was acquired in 1972 by Herder. The constantly extended and updated reference book (1976 was released the 28th edition ) has been supported by a distinguished panel of historians. Since the 29th edition (1980 ) the work appeared under the title The Great Ploetz. Excerpt from the story. The main new features of this edition existed in a larger format, the extension by social and economic historical aspects and the introduction of chapters on individual eras and spaces. In 1995, the publishing house was dissolved. The 33rd and 34th edition of the Great Ploetz (2003, 2005) each appeared as licensed editions. The Göttingen scientific publisher Cambridge University Press 2008 also brought under license the 35th and completely revised edition on the market.

Current edition

The 35th edition, published by Cambridge University Press in 2008, is subtitled The Encyclopedia of World History and is the collaboration of more than 80 historians since 1980, the first time was again revised and restructured fundamentally content. The factory covers 2128 pages, contains over 200 historical maps, about 250 genealogical tables, graphs and tables as well as a register with more than 25,000 entries. The conditions of each era are shown in systematic introductions, time -spanning developments and structures discussed in thematic blocks. Visual changes include the continuous four-color layout and two-column set.

The rough outline is adapted to the methodological and conceptual research state of the science of history and no longer seven, but five parts: I. Background II antiquity, III the Old World between about 500 and 1500, IV modern period from about 1500 to 1945 V Last time in 1945. A majority of the entries has been completely rewritten and updated. The composition of the 85 authors meets the demand of the scientific actuality also invoice. Current events and developments are recorded until the spring of 2008. A system of references at the beginning or end of a section allow the link between the themes of individual sub- chapter. Also the more than one hundred -page registers, divided into a persons, places and subjects, working with references to other keywords. The person register contains additional biographical information.
