Der Messias (Klopstock)

The Messiah is an epic in 20 cantos of Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock.

Klopstock published the first three cantos of the Messiah in 1748 with the subtitle " A heroic poem ." Over the years, he gave the other songs out together with revised versions of previously published parts. The first complete edition was published in 1772, further revised versions published in 1781 and 1798. Klopstock used as the first in the history of German literature through hexameter and thus draws on the epics of Homer ( Iliad and Odyssey). Content opens the " Messiah " in Germany the era of sentimentality.

The work was a model for the Messiaden from the 18th century.
