Der Stricker

The Knitter was a prolific Middle High German poet in the first half of the 13th century.

Little is known about his life circumstances, except that he was probably of humble origin and had to earn his living as a walking and professional poets. Whether his name is a talking " stage name " was how many proverbs traditionally carried him about in the meaning " of the story weaver ", or whether it is a proper name, is controversial. Linguistically - dialectal peculiarities indicate that he came from the southern Rhine francs, or from the eastern Franks; However, his poetic career shows him mainly in Austria. His works are likely to have originated 1220-1250.

His work includes, among other things large and small forms of epic poetry from different genera: the revision of the formal and narrative outdated perceived Roland song (Karl ), a highly unusual Arthurian romance ( Daniel of the blooming valley ), and the new form of ( doctrinal or comic ) short story, which can be regarded as the actual performance of the knitter's literary history. The antics of its priests Amis, main figure of eponymous collection Schwank, can be found in later times in other literary figures such as Till Eulenspiegel, again.
