The Traumgörge is a late romantic opera by the Austrian composer Alexander Zemlinsky. The libretto was written by Leo field. Zemlinsky composed the work of 1904-1906, premiered it, however, came only almost 75 years later, on 11 October 1980 at the Nuremberg Opera.

Genesis

" The Traumgörge " was Zemlinsky's third opera and was commissioned by the Imperial Court Opera under its then director Gustav Mahler. The planned for the 1907/ 08 season premiere, it did not come because of Mahler Demissionierung however. His successor, Felix Weingartner no longer felt bound to Mahler's commitments and emphasized the already finished work tried out his plans. Zemlinsky, even though he was a respected conductor, did not patronize his own work and bring yourself to the performance.

Performance history

As part of the resurgent interest in Zemlinsky's work in the 1970s, the manuscript was discovered in the archives of the Vienna State Opera and finally concluded on October 11, 1980 at the Nuremberg Opera House with Karl -Heinz Thiemann in the lead role for the premiere.

In 1988 a CD recording of the complete opera with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra under Gerd Albrecht.

Action

Act 1

Main character is the only sunken in his books pastor's son Görge. He has inherited the mill from the late Müller, who the current Müller has again allowed to flower. He tells her about a strange dream he had recently and his desire to make all dreams alive. Are interrupted both by the miller, the pastor and the peasants who remind them of their upcoming betrothal. Grete would actually not introverted dreamer, but a man who has both feet in life. There in the charming and stormy Hans opposite in its properties Görge on and courts immediately Grete, but rejects him. Living in his dream world Görge assumes the events around him hardly share and sleeps after the rest are gone, a. In sleep he talks to his dream princess and wakes up happy on. Act 2

Three years later: Görge is still looking for his princess. He gets into the parlor of a village where farmers are planning a rebellion against authority and try to win Görge for their projects.
