Jewish intellectuals lead in the salon of the banker Ehrenberg contrary conversations about the future. The way there called Zionism, socialism, and assimilation into the dominant society of Vienna.

Two Christians: Georg and Anna

The love of Baron Georg von Wergenthin to the Catholic petit bourgeois Anna Rosner is unhappy.

The 27 -year-old George, " a beautiful, slim, blond man, Germane, Christian," lives with his brother in the family home in Vienna. Mother and father are deceased. Georg composed. The Viennese Anna, the " kind, gentle, intelligent creatures " with the beautiful voice, sings his songs. George accompanied the 23 -year-old on the upright piano. Her stage career has abandoned the talented girl.

In the salon Ehrenberg Georg applies not only to Elsie, the daughter of the house, but also to the young Jewish girl Therese Golowski, a leading Social Democrat. It whispers, this woman had already been imprisoned for lese majeste. Therese is Anna's friend. Anna earned her living by teaching music. So she performs occasionally, among other things with the banker's daughter Else.

George, who wants to compose an opera, has found in his friend, the 30 -year-old Jewish writer Heinrich Bermann, the librettist. The Bohemian disputed occasionally quite controversial with George. The libretto brings Henry during the time of action of the novel, not on paper. George, the Viennese salon in Ehrenberg for a " dilettante aristocrats " hold wants to leave Vienna. He strives for a career as a conductor. The Hungarian Jew George Eissler would like this to help. The old man has an influential friend at the court theater in Detmold. Eissler's son Willy occurs together with the Hussar lieutenant Demeter Stanzides in the salon Ehrenberg.

Georg and Anna fall in love. Although George had also cast an eye on Elsie, but then it turned to Anna. Anna is also the desires of the heart, George may be a great artist. Ashamed must Georg, Anna actually only desires to acknowledge the young girl purer love. As the night of perfect happiness has elapsed, George longs indeed for Anna, but he would be just to be alone again. When Anna is pregnant, she expects from George that he marries her. But the expectant father itself with the "I will never leave you, both of you. " Else, does not miss the happiness of the couple in the salon, reacts irritably. Ms. Rosner sits " the deceiver make powerless " against. Georg afford a trip to Italy with Anna. The trip from hotel to hotel appears as an escape from the Viennese salon. George resources are running out. He wants to hide Anna's pregnancy. First, Anna believes sometimes even that they will be married. But George would not bind. Anna fluctuates between joyful anticipation of the child and despair. George is unable to hide Anna's pregnancy. In northern Italy the couple Demeter Stanzides traveling with Anna's friend Therese Golowski pleasure met.

The child, a beautiful boy, is born dead. George accepted a call to Detmold. A Kapellmeister is vacant. Initially working as a coach, George lives in a well- Westphalia. The Baron varies. Should he marry Anna? When he dwells for a short visit in Vienna, there is no lack of relevant suggestions from friends. Else, who has now engaged to an Englishman wants to take George's child with him. When she is taught by Georg about the death of the boy, her pity Anna applies. Georg Anna wants to approach again. But because of marriage again is no question, it rejects him. This decision comes George Annas contrary actually. Because he wants to be free. So the Baron goes alone to Detmold.

Form

The novel is not devoid of sentimentality. For example, George blames himself for the death of his child. He did not love it enough.

The History of Love by George on Anna is told. Anna falls for a minor character. Schnitzler allowed the thought only George, his friend Heinrich hardly in exceptional cases and Anna. It seems that the two main thematic threads of the novel, which are "two Christians: Georg and Anna " and " Jews in Vienna", linked by force.

Jews in Vienna

The novel is a treasure trove on the above subject, the turn of the 20th century on. Although an episode is hardly elaborated narrative on this issue, although only occurs on a top layer, but from the partially sprawling conversations, the reader learns much about the origin, insult and defamation of Jews in the multiethnic state of Austria - Hungary. The patriotism of the Jews comes up. Jews disavow their faith and even anti-Semites.
