The Derby Highway is a link road to the north of the Australian state of Western Australia. It connects to the port city of Derby on the Great Northern Highway near the Curtin Air Base. The road is carried out on the entire length of two tracks.

Course

The Derby Highway branches off at the southwest corner of Curtin Air Base of Great Northern Highway ( N1) to the north and runs along the western border of the Air Base. After about 30 km the village Mowanjum is reached. 6 km from the east flows the Gibb River Road.

After a total of 41 km, the road ends at Loch Street in Derby, where it merges into a four-lane dual carriageway.

Curtin Air Base

The abandoned air base of the Royal Australian Air Force ( RAAF ) is located east of the Derby Highway and north of the Great Northern Highway. It was formerly used as a reception center for refugees and as a civilian airport. Currently, however, it does nothing meaningful more.

Tourism

At the Derby Highway, the Gibb River Road ends, a Outbackpiste that allows access to the Kimberleys. Also, the highway opens up many good fishing spots in the mouth of the Fitzroy River; one of the better known is The cutting.

Extension

In recent years, Derby Highway was gradually widened. The works have been carried out until now to 15 km of track and will soon be completed.
