Derek Allhusen

Derek Swithin Allhusen, ( born January 9, 1914 in Chelsea, UK, † April 24, 2000 in Norwich ) was an English rider and horse breeder, took part in the Olympic Winter and Summer Games, winning a gold and a silver medal at the Summer Olympics 1968 in Mexico.

Derek Allhusen was born in London, went to Eton and Le Rosey to school, studied at Trinity College, Cambridge and graduated with an honors degree in history from. He then joined the army, but left this to marry on April 28, 1937 " The Honourable " Claudia Betterton. As early as 1938 he returned to his regiment back and fought during the Second World War as Kavallarist the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers in France, Italy and North Africa, and in 1944 awarded the Silver Star. He left the army in 1949, he most recently held the rank of Major.

As a war veteran, he brought from Germany with two horses and settled in Claxton, Norfolk, where he began breeding horses. He was able to qualify with one of the horses, Laura, for the winter pentathlon at the 1948 Olympic Games in St. Moritz, finishing in sixth place there, where he had his best individual result in the riding course. In the summer he began training for the pentathlon while getting to the Military Riding (now eventing ) know. But only a few years after his discharge from the army, he managed with Laurien, the daughter of Laura to take part in the European Championships. In 1957, he won gold in the team bronze in 1959 and silver in the individual with the team. In 1961 he bought the brown Irish Lochinvar, with whom he each team became European Champion in 1967 and 1969 and at the age of 54 years as the biggest success of his career Olympic victory in the team - along with Richard Meade, Mary Bullen and Sgt Reuben Jones - as well as silver in the Single at 1968 Olympic Games celebrated in Mexico. It should be representative of the team the Order MBE, this, however, declined because his teammates should not be honored with him.

After he retired from the sport, he was able to record as a breeder further success. His wife, Claudia, who was active as a dressage rider and adjudicator, assisted him in the training of horses. So Lauriens son Laurieston was double Olympic gold medalist at the 1972 Olympics in Munich under Richard Meade. Allhusen was honored in 1984 with the Order of Knights Royal Victorian Order. He was also president of the British Horse society of 1986 until 1988. Allhusen died at the age of 86 in Norwich in Norfolk.
